Top 5 Picks to Keep Kids Cool and Happy This Summer
It can be labor intensive and expensive to follow the crowds to the coast to beat the summer heat, so we’ve rounded up a few local La Quinta favorites for the kiddo’s to look forward to as things slow down around town.
1 - Go to the Movies
Cinemark Century Theatres in La Quinta is the perfect summer cool zone. While adults have changed the landscape of movies by committing to hardcore couch time and sophisticated home theatre’s, kids (and the kid in us) still long for the movie theater experience. AC? Check. Snacks? Check. Hollywood has not disappointed the taste of younger fans. Movie theaters once hosted one or two G/PG movies amongst multiple R rated films, but that scene has since flipped. A quick scan of “what’s playing now” shows there is no shortage of kid friendly movies at our favorite theaters in La Quinta. Tuesdays are worth checking out as they are budget friendly.
2 - Take Art Lessons
Understandably a local favorite, the La Quinta art scene is absolutely for all ages. Art expands the mind in so many ways for children. It builds confidence, patience, and intellect. The valleys artists and art teachers alike offer up experiences that range from summer camps to open crafts sessions. Art Major Studio is a local favorite as well as the iconic Old Town Artisan Studios. Both are sure to keep you and your kids cool, calm and well balanced.
3 - Splash Into a Community Swimming Pool
“But we have our own pool” said no child ever. Aren’t they always more interested in someone else’s than their own? In their eyes, community pools are filled with interesting people, friends, activities and most importantly - are much bigger. Did we mention splash pools and lifeguards so parents can get a little peace of mind? Don’t forget to check out the summer free film events at sunset as well.
4 - Make It A Library Day
You know the drill - from toddler story times to arts and crafts to just the pure joy of picking out books, public libraries are the go-to for every parent. Started in 1976 as a bookmobile stop, the La Quinta Library found its permanent home in 1988. It since has grown to be a city staple of education and entertainment for all ages. With over 80,000 offerings from books to magazines you’re sure to delight your family with a visit. It’s also a great way to keep track of summer reading.
5 - Visit Civic Center Park
We know, it sounds kinda like a school field trip, but hear us out. La Quinta’s City Hall is one of the prettiest places in town! Birds, bunnies, art, playgrounds, and plenty of shaded rolling grass and water fountains to run through. Bring snacks, toys and a picnic blanket and sit under the shade trees while the kids explore.
Enjoy!
