La Quinta Through a Locals Eye: Elena Wilkie

Elena Wilkie/La Quinta/La Quinta Days

Being a creative has run through local La Quinta resident Elena Wilkie’s bones since her early days as a hairstylist in NYC. Since moving to La Quinta a few years ago, Elena has been bitten by an artistic bug that showcases her incredible eye for wearable art. So much so that she has put her focus on creating her beautiful earrings full time, and the community welcomes her creations by displaying them proudly in boutiques and art galleries alike.

We caught up with Elena to talk about her journey from NYC to La Quinta, her collabs with local muralist & husband Ravi, and of course - her favorite local places to hang out

When did you start your business?

Recently - I started my business early this year. Before that I was a hairstylist for over 25 years. I feel I've always been creative in some way. Since moving to the desert my focus has shifted and I was ready to put my energy into other things. Making jewelry was something that was on my mind and with the support of my husband I was able to shift out of being a hairstylist and experience life as creative in a much different way.

It took you a minute to find your forever home here in La Quinta. What was that like?

I am originally from NYC. My husband, Ravi and I moved here about 3 yrs ago. We first moved to Redondo Beach, CA and lived there for 5 years, but realized it wasn't home. In the midst of trying to figure out where to relocate we took a trip out to Palm Desert for Christmas in 2019 and fell in love. The weather and the mountains stole our hearts and it quickly felt like home. We decided to give it a try and moved here in the summer of 2020 in the middle of the pandemic and never looked back! Getting to open our front door every morning and see the mountains is definitely something special.

You switched careers to focus on your art, your earrings. What’s the best part about that?

The best part is getting to be creative and being able to share it with other people. Also, my husband and I are business partners. We get to create and collaborate together which is so much fun. I love that we are a team and we are growing our business together.

How has the local community accepted you?

The community here in La Quinta has been so supportive! There are so many opportunities to network and meet other locals in the area. A lot of the businesses are very welcoming of local artists too, which is amazing! It allows me to grow my business in an authentic way and get to know the community better.

Enzo's Bistro and Bar in La Quinta
They have the best happy hour! My husband and I love to sit in the bar area and get our favorites. Some include their homemade pizza and Espresso Martinis.

It's A Beautiful Day

This farm to table restaurant is amazing! I love the vibe and the owners Mackenzie and Justin are so sweet and welcoming. I love their healthy food options and quality service.

Yes Please

This cafe and dessert bar is so good. My favorite is the Lavender Lattes ! They are made with locally grown & organic coffee from Joshua Tree. Gina, the owner, is also a dessert chef, so there is always something delicious there for your sweet tooth.

RD RNNR Libations Pints & Plates

They have such a fun atmosphere, especially in their new spot upstairs on Main Street. All the staff is friendly and the food is super tasty! The owners, Chris & Anita have  been so supportive with the local artist community as well. We have been able to sell our desert themed art cards and prints there and the best part is being able to sit on the patio and admire my husband's mural on the walls
